Choosing the right cutting equipment can make a major difference to safety, efficiency, and finish quality on a job site. Two tools that are often confused are demo saws and concrete saws. While they may look similar, they are designed for different tasks and materials.
In this in-depth guide, we explain the difference between demo saws and concrete saws, their applications, advantages, limitations, and how to choose the right one for your project. This guide is brought to you by Quinns Rocks Tool Hire, your trusted local tool hire expert in Western Australia.
What Is a Demo Saw?
A demo saw (short for demolition saw) is a high-powered handheld cutting tool used for heavy-duty cutting tasks. It is commonly used in demolition and construction environments where speed and power are critical.
Demo saws are typically petrol-powered and fitted with abrasive or diamond blades. They are designed to cut through a wide range of tough materials with ease.
Common Materials a Demo Saw Can Cut
- Concrete slabs
- Brick and masonry
- Asphalt
- Steel and metal pipes
- Stone and pavers
Because of their versatility, demo saws are often a go-to tool for general construction and demolition work.

Key Differences Between Demo Saws and Concrete Saws
Although both tools cut concrete, their design and purpose differ significantly. Understanding these differences helps ensure the right tool is used for the job.
Comparison Table
| Feature | Demo Saw | Concrete Saw |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Use | General demolition and cutting | Precision concrete cutting |
| Power Source | Mostly petrol | Electric, petrol, or hydraulic |
| Cutting Accuracy | Moderate | High |
| Depth Control | Limited | Excellent |
| Typical Blade | Abrasive or diamond | Diamond only |
| Dust Control | Minimal | Advanced (often water-fed) |
| Common Users | Builders, demolition crews | Concreters, civil contractors |
Power and Performance
Demo saws are built for raw power. Their high RPM engines allow them to cut through dense materials quickly, making them ideal for demolition tasks where precision is less important.
Concrete saws, on the other hand, prioritise consistent torque and stability. This ensures smooth, straight cuts even through reinforced concrete.

Precision and Control
Concrete saws excel when precision matters. Walk-behind concrete saws include adjustable depth controls, guide wheels, and stabilising frames to ensure straight and uniform cuts.
Demo saws are handheld and rely heavily on operator skill. While effective, they are less suitable for detailed or decorative concrete cutting.
Dust and Water Management
Concrete cutting produces large amounts of hazardous silica dust. Concrete saws often include integrated water feed systems to suppress dust and improve blade life.
Demo saws may have optional water attachments, but dust control is generally less sophisticated. This makes concrete saws safer for indoor or urban environments.

Blade Types and Compatibility
Both demo saws and concrete saws use diamond blades, but the blade selection differs.
Demo Saw Blades
- Abrasive blades for metal
- General-purpose diamond blades
- Multi-material cutting blades
Concrete Saw Blades
- Concrete-only diamond blades
- Reinforced concrete blades
- Asphalt-specific blades
Using the correct blade improves cutting speed, safety, and finish quality.

Typical Projects for Demo Saws
Demo saws are best suited for:
- Demolition of walls and slabs
- Cutting steel beams and pipes
- Emergency rescue operations
- General construction cutting tasks
If your project involves varied materials, a demo saw offers flexibility.
Typical Projects for Concrete Saws
Concrete saws are ideal for:
- Expansion joint creation
- Road and driveway cutting
- Trenching for services
- Structural concrete removal
These tools deliver clean, professional results for concrete-specific work.
Safety Considerations
Both tools are powerful and require proper training and PPE. Safety should always be a priority.
Essential Safety Gear
- Safety glasses or face shield
- Hearing protection
- Gloves
- Steel-capped boots
- Respiratory protection

Which One Should You Hire?
Choosing between a demo saw and a concrete saw depends on your project needs.
Choose a Demo Saw If:
- You need to cut multiple materials
- Speed is more important than precision
- The job involves demolition
Choose a Concrete Saw If:
- You need clean, straight concrete cuts
- Dust control is essential
- You are working on structural or civil projects

Maintenance and Ease of Use
Concrete saws generally require more setup due to water connections and depth adjustments. However, they reward users with superior results.
Demo saws are quicker to deploy and easier to manoeuvre, especially in tight spaces.
Cost Efficiency and Hire Value
Hiring the correct tool reduces project time, labour costs, and equipment wear. Using a demo saw for precision concrete work may lead to poor results and rework.
Concrete saw hire offers better value for projects that demand accuracy and finish quality.
